Starting Tuesday, February 18, NorthstarMLS has new data fields and new options under existing fields. These are to accommodate popular requests from current subscribers, and to accommodate potential future MLS mergers.

Please take a few moments to check out our detailed list of MLS field changes.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Property Sub Type: A new field where you can identify special kinds of properties beyond the Style field, such as Patio Homes, Cabins, etc. 
  • Internet Options: A new field to indicate the type of Internet connections available (Cable, DSL, Fiber Optic, Satellite).
  • Parking Characteristics: Added values to indicate when there are multiple garages, a shared garage/stall or an electric vehicle charging station.
  • Appliances: Water Heater options added for Gas, Electric, Oil and Wood.

NorthstarMLS Clear Cooperation Policy effective March 1st

Last November, the National Associations of REALTORS® Board passed Policy 8.0, also known as the Clear Cooperation Policy (91% of its 800 Directors voted in favor). As a result, there are some changes to NorthstarMLS policy, effective March 1, 2020.

NorthstarMLS Policy
In response to NAR’s Clear Cooperation Policy, effective 3/1/2020, our Board of Directors has adopted the following:

In the event a Withheld (i.e. Office Exclusive) listing is publicly marketed during the term of the listing, then:

  • Within one (1) business day of marketing a property to the public, the listing broker must enter and submit the listing to the MLS for cooperation with other MLS Participants (Active, TNAS or Coming Soon status if not yet Pending/Sold).
  • Examples of public marketing include but are not limited to: Broker and other public websites, any digital marketing (such as email blasts), yard signs, fliers displayed in windows, private listing networks.
  • All Withhelds are now considered “Office Exclusives” that may not be publicly marketed (unless entered into the MLS for cooperation within one business day of marketing).
  • All listings still must be entered into the NorthstarMLS Add/Edit system within two business days of the Listing Agreement Date (or within one business day if public marketing starts on the Listing Agreement Date). Withhelds (office exclusives) still must be entered into the Add/Edit system in Withheld status within two business days of the Listing Agreement Date.
  • Fine for violation: $1,000 for first violation. Fines escalate for additional violations.
  • Exempt from this Policy: Commercial, Rental, and new construction developments with multiple properties (single family homes, condos, etc.).

Tip of the Week – The Matrix Speed Bar

The Speed Bar Shortcut in NorthstarMLS Matrix allows you to create Custom Shortcuts that can be Saved and used in the Matrix Speed Bar anytime. The Speed Bar allows you to rerun a complex search or recreate a drawn map search area with just a few quick keystrokes. If you have a specific are you like to search with a map shape that does not correspond to a municipality, Zip code, or school district (like Lake Como seen in the screen shot below). Click here to see step-by-step instructions on setting up a new Speed Bar Shortcut.

To Delete a Speed Bar Shortcut
Go to the Settings link from the My Matrix tab. Click the Speed Bar Shortcuts Link and then Click the checkbox next to the shortcut you wish to delete and then click Delete.

Tip of the Week – Set Search Pre-Selects in Matrix

With the recent expansion of six Iowa Associations joining the NorthstarMLS Common Data Platform (CDP), searches on City names that exist in both Minnesota and Iowa may return listing results from both states – exampleFarmington, MN & Farmington, IA.

If you'd like to set your starting default State to MN so that you do NOT get duplicate cities from Iowa, go to the Matrix Search screen, select “Minnesota” in the State field, and then click the gear icon (upper right below the Results tab) and click the text "Set currently selected search criteria as my starting default." This will set it as your starting default search state. (You can also add any other criteria that you want pre-selected anytime you start a search.)

As you may have noticed, we have a new, frequently requested feature in our Add/Edit system: Clone. Not the biochemistry kind, but the ability to create an exact duplicate of an already existing listing for which you are the List or Co-List Agent (if your broker has granted you permission to add new listings). If you have Office Broker permissions, you may Clone any listing previously listed by any agent in your office.

Clone differs from the Copy function in that it duplicates everything: all listing data fields (including Remarks) all media (photos, supplements and virtual tours) and any future-dated open houses. The only thing we skip are certain date fields (List Date, Expiration Date) that you will want to set fresh.

To clone a listing, log in to the Add/Edit system, and click the Clone icon on any of your listings. 

It looks like this:

You will find it right next to the Copy icon. After clicking the Clone icon, click the Confirm button, and the system will create your Clone. Review your Cloned listing, make any desired changes, and save.

If you do not see the Clone icon, you are not the List/Co-List Agent on that listing or, your broker has not granted you permission to add listings.

Over the past couple of months, a group of six Iowa Associations have joined the NorthstarMLS Common Data Platform (CDP) whereby they enter their listings into our database (via our Add/Edit system) but continue to maintain their own separate front-end MLS system. Their listings (mostly in Iowa) are also available to you for search and view in NorthstarMLS Matrix.

As a result of this expansion, searches on City names that exist in both MN and IA can bring back listing results from both states.  Below is a list of the affected cities. If you search any of these cities (or have auto-emails saved using any of these cities), you can ensure that Iowa listings are excluded. On the Search screen, simply select “Minnesota” in the State field. We are working with our vendor on a long-term solution that will not require you to take this extra step.
