As you may have already noticed, the Bird’s Eye View on the bing maps in Matrix is no longer available. We apologize for not being able to give you information about this in advance. Here is what we have learned.

  • Microsoft discontinued Bird’s Eye View in their bing maps application for all third party vendors, not just Matrix.
  • Microsoft had been dealing with customer complaints on inaccuracy and outdated imagery for years on Bird’s Eye View and decided it was not worth maintaining.
  • CoreLogic, our Matrix vendor, has been fielding the same complaints from many of their MLS customers.
  • Although we lost Bird’s Eye View in the last update, the remaining satellite imagery has been improved to be more current.
  • The next update to Matrix (scheduled for October) will replace Bing maps with Google Maps in both The Matrix MLS and the Matrix Client Portal. We are very excited for this change, because all aspects of Google Maps are more accurate and up-to-date, as well as better features.
  • Sadly, Google Maps does not have the Bird’s Eye View, so that particular feature will not return.

We are sorry for the loss for those of you who liked using the Bird’s Eye View. We hope the impending integration of Google Maps is something you will look forward to and that will benefit you and your clients.

Effective today (January 12), Microsoft no longer supports the older versions of its Internet Explorer software: Versions 8, 9 and 10. What does that mean if you are still using an old version? You will likely still be able to use the MLS and other websites without issue for some time. However, as time goes on and the MLS and other systems are updated, you could run into issues. But more importantly, Microsoft will no longer publish security updates for these browser versions, making users still on them more vulnerable to malware and other threats.

If you are on Internet Explorer and want to check your version, select “About Internet Explorer” from the Help menu or the gear icon in the upper right corner of the browser. If you are on one of the now unsupported versions, contact your IT department or go to the Microsoft Internet Explorer Download Center. If you need help, contact our Help Desk at or 651-251-5456 (toll free 1-877-251-5455), M-F, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

On July 29, Microsoft plans to release Windows 10 as a free upgrade to its operating system.  This Windows upgrade will include Internet Explorer 11 (IE11), which is the same version of Internet Explorer included with Windows 8 and is compatible with NorthstarMLS Matrix. You will not have issues with Matrix if you upgrade to Windows 10 and continue to use IE11.

Windows 10 also includes a brand new browser called “Edge.” While you can use Edge with Matrix, it is new development code that Microsoft will continue to adjust, and therefore it could cause issues. We recommend that you continue to use IE11 with all NorthstarMLS systems until Microsoft stabilizes the new Edge browser.
